April 2006 - Posts

The Bears traded down in this year's NFL Draft. In fact, they traded out of the first round. Clearly, this is a punk move. Especially since we are in the top 3 NFL teams when it comes to money under the cap. Obviously I have no idea who the hell Danieal Manning is. I also dare anyone out there to tell me they do know who he is. He comes from Abeline Christian, a small school in Texas. The only way I can explain this pick is that Lovie went back home to Texas for a family reunion and saw this guy playing a pick up game at a BBQ. I won't even bother mentioning the fact that the Steelers swooped into the pick just above the one we traded away. They took Santonio Holmes from Ohio State -- the guy MikeJ predicted the Bears would have drafted in our mock.

Williams, the great running back from Memphis went to Carolina - the pick AFTER the one we traded away to Marv Levy, Dick Jauron and the Buffalo Bills. I swear that Lake Forest connection is strong.

Letsee what the Bears do with the 57th pick....I want Pope out of Georgia.
DO IT.

It's almost draft day - how exciting! Well, not if you're Vince Young. You've been dissed all week and now you become one of those stupid "what's missing in this picture" games you play in the back of that damn magazine when you're stuck waiting for the dentist...

So play along. What's missing in this picture? (thanks to Collin for emailing this one in!)

The 2006 Blogger Mock Draft was an idea I came up with half way through my migration from the old site. Mock drafts are not unique online. If you do a Google search for "NFL mock draft" , you probably run into 100k worth of links on the subject. What made ours different, was that we don't aggregate NFL bloggers like the super-sports blog sites. We also aren't a huge network of bloggers. Our mock draft would have been like all the others online: two guys eating donuts picking names out of a hat when it was the Packer's turn to draft.

It could have been an editorial staff making the picks. That didn't sound any better than the donut eating guys. Worse still, we don't have enough Bengals readers to make that crucial #24 pick. It made sense to invite all the bloggers from across the country and the blogsphere to help us with this project. Why not? They write about their team just as much as we write about the Bears. Some of them write much gooder than us two. :)

The difference between our mock draft and all the others you see online is that we allowed trades. We tried to make it as realistic as possible and still keep it simple. I don't know if we succeeded in that regard. There were no trades that were approved, but I can tell you there were over 30 different trade offers behind the scenes! All of them rejected! There was a lot of moving and shaking going on. I won't give away who was offering what, or how badly some teams wanted to trade down but I will say that the offers ranged from whacky to spot on. If you are that curious, take a look at each of the links on the overview page. Most of the bloggers added comments or wrote articles to express the thought process they were going through when they were on the clock. It's all good stuff. There is even a podcast or two that talks about it.

Now let's talk about the picks themselves. First, you guys should know that we had to Kiper the number 2 pick in the draft. The Saints were out of town and not able to get back to us in time, and I had no choice but to make their pick based on the Kiper projections. Turn based drafting via email was going to cause stuff like this, but I am happy it only happened once. (ok twice, with Reggie Bush at number 1) Many draft experts think the Saints pick is critical to this year's draft. I agree. If they would have taken Leinart instead of Williams, would the Titans have picked Vince Young?

Some of the surprises I saw on the draft board included Jay Cutler being drafted by the Ravens. That's the fan's pick, no question. Baltimore's fans hate their quarterback situation. Especially since their coaching staff doesn't see a problem. The question becomes similar to the one the Bears currently have: can one of these young bucks step up and lead us to the promise land? The Bear's answer to that question was no. That's why we signed Greise.

Another great pick, and one that scares me as a Bears fan is the Packers drafting of AJ Hawk. This guy is a menace. Deep down I hate this pick for many reasons. First, it's because I have to hear more stories about how he is dating Brady Quinn's sister. He of Notre Dame QB fame. That's a big who cares. Secondly, he could hurt our starting quarterback(s) early. Lastly, I can't stand to hear people say Buckeyes! everytime he makes a tackle. Sheesh.

I'm running out of time here, and you guys need to get back to work. So let me wrap this post up. I'll be back with some quick hits on each pick before the end of the day (work willing) - and be sure to check back on Monday when we compare our mock draft to the real draft.

Finally, I'd be curious to see who everyone thinks was the steal of our draft. Get your votes in. Drop me a note or a comment right here.

Thanks again to all our GMs. We hope to see you again next year!

What do you know?! It's done! Holy crap, we actually finished this thing. Strong work everyone!
The only thing left to do is get the comments and links to all of the posts from across the country. I'll have that up hopefully by tomorrow.

I did float around the blogs last night to notice the feedback on the draft. Many people thing our draft is very, very inaccurate. Especially after the first 8 picks. Some would argue that Kiper'ing the second pick set the tone for our draft I tend to agree. If the Saints were to pick Leinart with that second pick it would have been very interesting to see how the rest of those picks would have fallen in line. So stick around for the draft wrap up. I have some surprises cooking too (I'm not promising anything - but you never know - it will be cool if we can pull off what I have in mind)

Oh - and if you didn't notice - The Bears sent Mike Green to the Seahawks (congrats Seattle, you got a guy who in my opinion, was never good enough to get past 4th on our depth chart). Staying in the Pacific-Northwest (Microsoft land), the White Sox crushed the Mariners last night. And if you must know, the Cubs beat the Marlins last night. See, you get sports updates here too.

Good times.

Well, it looks like we are almost finished. Whew! I didn't think we would make it! In fact, many people didn't think we would make it. They said it's too hard to organize bloggers. They were right. It is hard to organize bloggers. With the exception of our rough start, only 2 picks have been Kiper'd. The code wasn't perfect, and the trading interface needed some work (you guys moved so fast, I didn't get a chance to upload the new rescind offer feature) but it still got done.

It got done without any trades...but the offers were flying in the background. Boy, were they flying! We even reached out to the 2 teams that didn't have a first round pick - just to make sure they were given an opportunity to get in the game. Overall, I am super happy with the results. How accurate this mock draft is compared to other mock drafts, or the real draft is yet to be determined. Regardless, the project can probably be deemed a success...as soon as the Steelers get that pick in!

I want to send a special thanks to all our GMs for making this happen.
Your ability to tolerate all my crappy emails and my rough first cut of this draft software was appreciated. You guys did a great job. Feel free to contact me with comments on your experience. I'll take all feedback. Including the bad stuff. It's the only way we will make next year's draft better.

To all our new readers: Welcome!
The draft board will stay up for awhile, and eventually move into it's own section of the site. The links you see on the board belong to the sites that participated in this year's mock draft. Take the time to visit them. (especially when the NFL season kicks off)
Also, hang around the site for awhile, bookmark us, or just subscribe to the many RSS feeds we have if you are interested in anything and everything related to Chicago Sports. If anything hang around to see the wrap up of the first annual CSB Blogger NFL Mock Draft.

Finally, there will be a post-draft write up in the coming days. Let me catch my breath and aggregate everyone's comments. We want to get a discussion going on how each team's Blogger GM handled their pick. So take note Blogger GMs: If you have written up your pick or perhaps you even have a podcast covering it - get it to me.

I'm going to wrap up it up... Special thanks to the Lions, Packers, Cowboys, Giants and the Jets for keeping me on my toes during this draft. Oh, and before I forget the Giants GM is offering a special chance to each NFL Blogger GM to be listed on his site as the reference for your respective teams (within his site). I'll be sending out the link in an email so watch for it.

That's all! Now get back to work.

I have been super busy tonight keeping an eye on the mock draft...but I did just turn on the White Sox game. It was a good thing too. I was just in time to see John Garland drop a ball that was hit to him when he tried to lightly toss it to first base. He just got lucky and got out of the 2 out jam in the 5th when he got the next batter he faced to pop out....

Sheesh. I hope there is picture of this nasty Not-a-web-gem in the morning.

Wait - I spoke too soon. Hawk and DJ just showed Ozzie mocking John Garland in the dugout between innings. Super funny stuff. I need to figure out how to get this video off my Tivo.
Anyone hack their Comcast dvr to pull video off of it yet? (I know it can be done)

Uribe just struck out in the 6th...nice swing.

Back in the morning with a recap of my weekend at the Sox game against the Twins.
Actually - why don't I give you a taste of it with this picture:

Finally - the Chicago Bears are on the clock. Many of you have probably had the chance to hang out here and read my blog - you guys should also take note that I am not drafting for the beloved Bear tonight...my buddy MikeJ is.

Stop over and subscribe to his RSS feed if you want much better coverage than my feed for your Bears news. He also does a good job of not crying in his beer about the Cubbies too often...

The site is dog slow tonight....I wonder what's causing this. We've held up pretty well all week long, but tonight is a different story...good think we use FeedBurner for our rss feed.

Oops...seems like Mike made the Bears pick. Time to go argue with him!

Oh man - look what Mike just drafted for da Bears: a Buckeye! Damn you, you Big Ten Kool-Aid drinking fan...at least he took my advice and drafted a wideout...

We have almost completed the Mock Draft. It would be great if we could get it done by tomorrow night - that way we could all sit back and analyze it a bit. So far, I have been pretty happy with our turn out. We have the Bucs on the clock - and I haven't heard from them in a long while...Don't get Kiper'd!

Get that pick in!

The rest of you behind the Bucs pick should be ready to go. Stay close to those email accounts, and remember, if you can't make your pick - just email me your instructions and I can get it in for you when it's your turn (trades not withstanding)

Lastly - a reminder to all the bloggers out there posting about your draft picks on your own sites - get me those article links so that I can aggregate them on the site for our post-draft wrap up.

Thanks again to everyone who participated in this year's Blogger NFL Mock Draft.

Bucs - you are on the clock!

I am super curious to see what my pal MikeJ is going to do with that Bears draft pick in our mock draft. Did I mention we are running a Blogger NFL Mock draft?

:)

The Bears signed Manning today to an offer sheet. Not that Manning. This one. This means that the Bears are probably going to draft a tight end. Frankly, I think we should be drafting a wideout, but if we do go tight end I like Pope from Georgia. Maybe Mercedes Lewis from UCLA. Frankly, I don't see TE being a position that helps us next year straight out of the draft. I understand very few wideouts make an impact in their rookie seasons (especially when the playbook in this town has only 10 pass plays) but do you think a TE has that much more of an impact?

I think not. Why not draft a QB? Oh wait - we have tons of those now.

One last thing - I would be shocked if the Bears didn't trade this first round pick away if for the simple fact that we don't want to pay first round money. I'm just putting it out there. Talk amongst yourselves while I get some shut eye...back in 5

I believe in curses. I know a lot of people in this town believe in curses too. Especially after watching DLee bust his wrist on a freak collision yesterday. The Trib wrote it up perfectly. I don't recall if it was Phil Rodgers, or Morissey - but it occurred to the real sports writer that every time the Cubs sign someone to a huge contract - they get hurt 10 days later. Kerry Wood comes to mind. It's a tough break. Literally.

The reason I bring up the troubled team to the North, is because they faced my wife's favorite team tonight. The St. Louis Cardinals (I have a story about them too from last week) The faced them, and shrank. What a horrible, horrible game. What a horrible decision to go with Williams on the mound against your biggest rival. Did anyone send Dusty a note to remind him you have to beat the guys in your own division? I can't lie - this isn't my point. I got it from the Cub fans at the bar tonight. Specifically our former writer and pal Shaj316.

Why didn't Dusty move the rotation up and let Zambrano open against the Cards? It bothers me, because while Lee is going to be tough to replace - it is only April. The season isn't over for the Cubs until at least July. They were starting to play good baseball only to watch their manager get lost inside a box of flavored toothpicks. Sheesh. In reality, what do I know. I really don't pay attention to the Cubs starting rotation, outside of that old man who is going to the hall of fame on a first ballot.

Oh, and a message from my Cardinals-loving partner in crime to all you Cubs fans:

Don't pitch to Albert.
Etch it into your forehead if you have to.

Hello White Sox fans! I bet you thought I forgot about our beloved Pale Hose, but I am back and very excited to report our first victory over the Twins this season. It was a great game. I am actually a bit peeved that I didn't get tickets to tonight's game. The matchup was stellar. Santana and that wicked hook-of-a-breaking ball he throws versus Beurhle. Our best versus their best. Let us face facts, the final score 7-1 doesn't reflect how close of a game this was. Let's review some points:

  • Santana is possibly the best pitcher in the AL. We haven't beat him a long while.
  • Santana made everyone look like Brian Anderson up until....
  • Jim Thome struck out his first two times against Santana - but homered off a fantastic breaking ball that was practically in the dirt. He is the anti-Frank in the media department and just as good in the batter's box. This was the key to the game.
  • Buehrle got a big win here. I love the fact he got this win. The Twins just got the message. So did the rest of the league. Buehrle can beat more than just the Royals. FACT.
  • The team is settling into a groove. We've won 10 out of the last 11. Streaks like this are going to pay off at the end of the season.
It was a good day to be a White Sox fan.One last thing...my wife keeps asking me why we call the Twins the Twinkies. I was hoping a Twins blogger would be able to comment on that. Maybe I should wikipedia it instead. Anyone know where the nickname stems from?

You gotta love the Buzzsaw that is the Arizona Cardinals - Vince Young! Nice pick Will

So we are stuck inside the MVN block of drafters in this year's Mock Draft.
They have massive problems with their email addresses (the mvn ones) so I have contacted them each individually to get their real email addresses. Sorry it took so long to get the Ravens on the board - I wanted to give them a shot to make the pick themselves and try our software out - but I couldn't hold the draft up any longer. Besides - Ravens Roost sent me his pick preferences. So he wasn't Kiper'd.

Next up is the Eagles MVN blogger - let's get through these picks guys because I have a feeling this weekend might slow us down further...

To the rest of you out there lying in wait - keep an eye on your emails - people are moving and shaking behind the scenes and you could be a part of that...Plus, I want you to be ready to draft when you are on the clock! As always - send me your picks via email if you think you can't log in and do it yourself!

We head into day 3 of the draft with the Lions on the board. I have confirmation from the Lions that they will be ready this morning to make their pick. Which is good news, because I think we can get through a ton more picks today.

Switching gears - I have a software update coming.
You guys should know I am mod'ing the trade interfaces and I should have that up today...
Let's hope I don't break anything, right?

Finally, keep the picks coming. We will be doing a breakdown of the draft on Monday. Until then, hit the draft board on the home page and check out the bloggers' sites for their comments.
For those of you who just stumbled upon us - kick back, relax, subscribe - and enjoy watching our project unfold.

Thanks again to all our blogger GMs.

Listen - I'm not giving anything away here - but let us just say the activity on the draft
is much, much improved.

So much so that I found a ton of bugs in my trading application.
So - please, please heed my warning here...I might mess things up...

What I will do is correct things manually - what does this mean?
You can make offers - just please be careful when accepting them.
If you have any questions - then shoot me an email before acting on it.
That makes me the bottleneck - but I'm online 24/7...so the turn around will be quick.

The act of accepting a trade offer will invite you into a new draft room.
That's pretty cool and all - except when it goes bad...but fear not. I am
following up with everyone via email to make sure we keep the draft quality intact.

Bear with me is all I am sayin...I might write up a new trade tool for you guys tonight...
Otherwise - good times so far....
Thanks to everyone for participating

Ok - so the Saints got back to me at like 3 in the morning.
But without a name for who they want to pick...
Just an apology that they are holding us up.

Well - they are holding us up no longer. I am giving them till 9am CST to get me a name. Then we are Kiper'ing their pick and putting the Titans on the clock. (who are ready and waiting, thanks to Goober)

Everyone else on my list has pretty much been very responsive and is ready to draft. The only people who haven't responded to my 'ping' are the Eagles.
I have some motivation for them...and the rest of you:

Let's get this done. :)

Update: I had to do it - The Saints are now off the clock. What a crappy start...but hell, they were warned like a 100 times. Let's hope the rest of this draft goes smoother. Keep an eye on your email fellas...
